Fine Texture, High Porosity, Low Density Hair

Your fine, thin hair takes moisture in easily but loses it just as fast. Fine hair lacks the innermost layer of the hair cuticle (the medulla), so it is not as strong as normal or coarse textured hair. It is prone to tangling and split ends. and may also have difficulty holding a style. With high porosity hair, the cuticles are open and remain open. The trick here is to try to seal (close) your cuticles to keep the moisture in. Due to the low density or thinness of your hair, more of your scalp is visible as a result you’ll want to incorporate styles and products that enhance your volume.

Helpful Hints:

  • Heat – Avoid direct heat on the hair as fine hair is more vulnerable to breakage. When blow drying always use a heat protectant.
  • Protein – Because high porosity hair lacks protein it is important to incorporate it into your hair regimen. Regularly make use of products that contain protein and protein treatments to help strengthen hair.
  • Detangling: Detangling high porosity hair when wet can cause more damage. Use your fingers when your hair is wet or opt to detangle on damp or dry hair.
  • Cold – Use cold water rinses to help close your cuticles.
  • Moisture retention – Try a pre-poo with your favourite oil(s) to help retain moisture.
  • Humectants –  Humectants can be especially great for high porosity hair because they absorb moisture from the air which helps keep the hair moisturized.  But they should also be used with caution. If the area you are in is high in humidity or moisture, humectants can absorb too much water into your hair and leave you with frizzy, swollen hair.  If the area you are in is low in humidity, humectants can actually take water directly from your hair, leaving it dry and susceptible to breakage.


Your Curlprint™ Regimen:

Cleanse and Clarify

  • Wash hair in sections (4-6 loose twists) to avoid over-manipulation and breakage
  • Use a mild, sulfate-free shampoo/cleanser to avoid stripping hair of its natural moisture.
  • Add an apple cider vinegar (ACV) rinse for your final rinse to close the cuticles.
  • If you’re looking to clarify and remove product build-up, clays are a great option, as they gently cleanse while removing toxins.
  • To avoid stripping hair of essential oils and moisture, try co-washing mid-week (if needed), or even every other wash week.

Deep Condition

  • Be sure to use a deep conditioner and a leave-in with lots of slip and always detangle gently from ends to roots.
  • Deep condition at least once a week.
  • Alternate between protein and moisture treatments as often as needed.

Moisturize

  • Use water-based leave-ins and moisturizers. Products that don’t have water will not be effective at moisturizing your hair.
  • Use light textured cream, or hair milk that won’t weigh your hair down.

Seal

  • Use oils to help seal and retain moisture while preventing breakage. Do this step as a often as needed. Look for oils such as sweet almond, olive, argan, and jojoba oil.
  • To combat moisture loss use the LOC (Liquid, Oil, Cream) method, that means layering with a leave-in and an oil followed by a cream.

Style

  • Use protective styles regularly to reduce stress on fragile hair.
  • When not in a protective style, create the illusion of volume with styles that won’t leave your scalp exposed (e.g., wash n’ go’s, chunky twist outs or braid outs, afros, etc.). And don’t forget to separate your curls (with care).
